Edit the Text in a PDF

Editing text in a PDF is harder than editing a word processor document, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. A PDF stores positioned glyphs, not paragraphs, so there is no reflow to inherit — change a line and everything around it stays exactly where it was.

Where it stops is equally worth stating. This is not a substitute for editing the source document, and rewriting a paragraph to a different length will not reflow the page around it. If you have the original file, edit that and re-export; if all you have is the PDF, this gets the correction made.

Common questions

Will edited text match the rest of the document?

Where the original font is embedded and covers the characters you type, the replacement is drawn in that same font, size and colour. If a needed glyph is missing from the embedded subset, the app falls back to the closest available match.

Does editing text reflow the paragraph?

No. A PDF stores positioned glyphs rather than flowing paragraphs, so surrounding content stays where it is. Edits work best when the replacement is close in length to the original.
